If you’ve ever tried to add a link to Instagram or TikTok and realized it wasn’t that simple, you’re not imagining things. Instagram and TikTok were not created to send users off the app, which made adding links tricky. But things have changed; now, there are ways to connect your audience with the content, products, and pages you want them to see.

How to Add Links on Instagram
- Link in bio: This is still the main way to share a clickable link. Tools like Linktree or Later’s Linkin.bio let you create a mini landing page for multiple links. You can even make your landing to list your links so all web traffic goes directly to your website (like my link in bio).
- Link stickers in Stories: If your account is eligible, you can add direct links to your Instagram Stories. (This used to be limited to big accounts—now it’s more available!)
- Direct links in DMs: You can send clickable links via Instagram messages.

How to Add Links on TikTok
- Link in bio: Business accounts can add a website link directly to their TikTok bio.
- Personal accounts: Some personal accounts (depending on location and follower count) can also add a website.
- Product links and TikTok Shop: For sellers, TikTok now offers options to link products directly inside videos.
What About Links in Instagram Captions?
Here’s the tricky part: links placed inside Instagram post captions aren’t clickable. I have seen many brands type out their URLs (and social media managers who should know better) on Instagram and TikTok, assuming users will take the time to type the URL manually or take a screenshot to grab the link and copy/paste. If you need to include a link in a caption, you can still make it easier for your audience to remember or type it manually by:
- Keeping the URL short and simple (use a URL shortener like Bit.ly or create easy-to-remember slugs on your site)
- Using branded links (like byersandbeyondmarketing.com/services instead of a messy link)
- Reinforcing the link visually (“Link in bio” reminders or clean graphics pointing to it)
- Repeating the link in your Instagram Stories or your bio for easy tapping
Making your links as simple, memorable, and branded as possible will help lower the chances of people giving up when they can’t just click.
